Ian served as Leader of Hillingdon Council from 2021 until May 2026 and has been a councillor since 2014, following a distinguished public service career spanning more than 50 years. Throughout his leadership, Ian consistently challenged central government over the long-standing underfunding of Hillingdon, while defending the delivery of essential local services and campaigning for a fairer funding settlement for outer London boroughs.
A resident of the borough since 1981, Ian remains deeply committed to protecting Hillingdon’s green belt and open spaces, and firmly opposes any attempt by the Mayor of London to use local land to meet the housing needs of other boroughs. He has also long opposed the construction of a third runway at Heathrow Airport, believing it would cause significant harm to local residents while delivering limited benefit to Hillingdon. However, should expansion ever proceed, Ian has consistently maintained that the borough must secure the best possible outcome for residents.
Prior to entering elected office, Ian served as a Chief Officer at the London Borough of Hillingdon until December 2010. Before that, he was Borough Commander for Richmond, retiring from the Metropolitan Police Service in 2007 after 31 years of service.
